On Instagram, I’ve seen a lot of images with manhole covers in the foreground in sharp focus and a city scape behind them out of focus. I tried my hand at this the other night in Boston. It was not as easy as it looks. I made the top shot with my Canon. The one below was done on my iPhone and was much easier.
Often, the manhold covers are wet which adds reflections. The one above was wet from an earlier rain shower. Many photographers bring water with them to wet their manhole cover is mother nature doesn’t do it for them.

Cool 😀
Thank you!
I’ve seen manhole covers in other states and countries that were true pieces of art and always found it interesting. Nice shots.
Thank you. I wished I could have found a more interesting cover. This one happened to be the one that worked.
The shot was great!
Thank you.
Interesting! The first photo has a cinematic feel to it.
Thank you. Yes, it does feel different.
You’re welcome, Chris.
The reflection is dreamy. 💫
Thank you, Gail!
Looks like a topic for another photo challenge! Interesting concept.
It’s a good challege. One issue was that I couldn’t get my tripod to go low enough without a lot of reconfiguring. I took this with the camera resting on my back pack. That’s why it’s easier with my iPhone.
I can see what you mean. I’ll try to keep my eyes open for an opportunity to give this a try.
Its actually amazing Chris
Thank you, Mich!
That’s quite interesting, should try it out myself.
The issue was that it was a challenge to get my tripod low enough. In the end, I rested the camera on by backpack on the ground.
Thanks for the advice!
clever with the lights and angle – and artsy Chris
Thanks, I was trying some new things.
🙂
Cool, but I would probably get run over taking this shot. 🥺
There wasn’t a lot of traffic, but I was careful to watch my back.
That is good! 🙂
Cool and different!
☺️😎reflections always fun too! 👌
Yes, I try to use them but don’t feel I’ve mastered it yet.
It’s all fun! Enjoy ☺️🤓
