Once the ice is thick enough in Alton Boy on Lake Winnipesaukee, they plow a runway for small private planes to land. I went up on Sunday of last weekend. With good weather, there were landings every few minutes. Alton Bay is surrounded by local restaurants. The pilots fly in, have a good meal, socialize, and then fly back home. It’s something to see.

It is definitely something to see. We went up the first of the month. It never fails to amaze me.
I like when you bring home pictures of small planes.. =^_^=..
I try! Waves hello!
I had no idea! It must be quite a sight to see.
It was pretty fun. They closed for the season yeasterday.
Yes, it looks like we’re in for some thawing.
Restaurants open, socializing in a pandemic????
With masks and other precautions. It’s the new normal.
This is right up my alley! In our neck of the woods, there isn’t much winter flying, but those Minnesota lakes are pretty busy on the weekends with float planes. Always fun to watch, and occasionally I get to fly a friend’s Piper Cub on floats.
Nice! I saw some video online of a pilot’s eye view.
Great captures and I am blown away with the whole thing. I would freak as a passenger on them as I would visualize the ice breaking. Guess that comes from living away from a real 4 season climate for so many years:)…..great post!!
Thank you Kirt. If you check out their fb page they have some cool images from the cockpit.
Will do…thanks!!
I would love to fly there with my hubby. That would be o fun!
They closed for 2021 the other day. Maybe next year. Where are you located?
We are in Indiana.
So nice and I can imagine the view above. A lovely day to fly!
Always wondered, if that’s ice how do they stop?
It just amazes me that ice can be so thick that planes can safely land on it!
omg..I LOVE this. It puts me in mind of the iceboats of Muskegon.
We have one local float plane. I’d like more but we do have a major airport close to the lake so that may be a factor. I really don’t know.
I love places that accept and celebrate winter.
Thank you. It was a thrill to go and see this. They get float planes in summer but not nearly the volume. You have to embrace winter or else it’s just a chore.
