I was hiking last month and spotted this rather pecked away tree on a hill off the trail. I really appreciated the rugged shapes and stopped to climb the hill and take a picture.
There is a dead maple on the corner of our lot and I keep waiting for it to crumble and it keeps holding on despite the ravages of decay and woodpeckers.
Sometimes in this pandemic I feel hollowed out like that tree was by woodpeckers. But today I had a beautiful red bellied woodpecker at my feeder for the first time, so I’m upbeat about woodpeckers today.
I’d say that poor tree has given up the ghost! Black-and-white is very effective for this one.
Thank you Liz. This is all about the form. I wonder how much linger it will stand.
You’re welcome, Chris. I would say that before too long, the tree will ease itself to the ground to become one with the earth again.
Wow, someone had a feast ๐
Nice capture, Chris.
Thank you. They must have found lots of little critters inside.
That is one wholly holed tree!
Holy woodpeckers, Batman
๐
We have a couple trees that look like that. ๐๐
They are like works of art.
Very true. In fact, we leave them standing and have discovered they make the perfect home for someone else. ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ
Obviously a condo. ๐
Arizona’s iconic saguaro cactus is similarly marked for homes from the Gila Woodpecker among others.
That’s right. I’ve seen those but had forgotten.
now you are talking my kind of tree…. obviously it was a tasty tree..=^_^=
I’m sure it was full of tasty critters.
wow he had fun!
He did!
I’m surprised it’s still standing!

Thank you so much. It’s one of a kind.
Seems they worked very hard and so artistic too. Beautiful photograph. Thank you, Love, nia
The artistic element drew me to climb the hill to photograph it. Have a wonderful weekend, Nia.

The bird have been at our feeder constantly since the storm. It’s good to see signs of life.
What a cool capture my friend! Black and white did it for me!
Happy Weekend to you!
Thank you, Nancy. Happy weekend.
Wow this looks like it was a scrumptious tree! Great capture. Black and white is a great choice too! I hope youโre doing well Chris. Take care
Things are good here. I hope it’s the same on your side of the country.
looks kinda”Halloween” faced…..
You’re right. It’s a bit scary looking.
It could be a home for squirrels or an owl.
It would make a good one. I wouldn’t put my hand in any of those holes.
My! Those woodpeckers made a great job reducing this tree to almost tinders! ๐ But great photo!!
Thank you. They must have had a feast.
