Pulpit Rock Tower was one of several observation towers in the area built during World War II to search for enemy ships and airplanes. If any were spotted, the coordinates could be radioed to nearby Fort Dearborn (now Odiorne Point State Park) which had two rather large guns that could be trained on targets. This is one of the few remaining and the only one that is on public land. They open it for tours twice a year: on Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day weekends. You can see a video of the view from the observation deck here.
Important to always remember…never forget 🤓thanks for sharing these Chris ☺️ smiles from the west coast 💫 have a joyful day!
Thank you Hedy. I totally agree. Have a nice evening.
Perfect reminder for Veterans’ Day. Our country was not so divided back then. And thanks for the video too along with the photos.
My pleasure. Yes, there have been times that our country really came together. It would be good to see that again.
What? No Rapunzel? 😉
I missed the whole Rapunzel tie in. Good one.
Gorgeous views! Have you been to the observation tower at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine?
Thank you. No, I’ve not been there. It sounds intriguing. I think I cycled by the park but not to the tower.
Great pics and great information. I had no idea we had anything like that built during WWII, but makes sense.
Thank you so much. It was interesting to see.
Impressive tower and interesting history! I imagine there were/are quite many of these observation posts on both coastlines of the USA?
I do t know how common these were. There were several in this area because there was a nearby naval base and a shipyard. The shipyard is still active repairing submarines.
