Old Sturbridge Village is a living history museum in Central Massachusetts that depicts life n the 1830s. This past weekend, they demonstrated the harvesting and processing of wool.
They did a really nice job. Our five year old niece had a difficult time believing that shearing the sheep was the first step that ended with a wool cap or pair of socks. Seeing the other steps in the process in other exhibits may have made her a believer.
The sheep rallied and in the end won by two falls and a submission. But it was close …
I love these shots. (As for shearing, I (a townie) helped a friend once on a small-holding. The eighty-odd lambs were eeeeeeasy, the thirty or so ewes were a challenge, but the second ram literally threw me right over the bows of the tractor. I’d have taken the remnants of my dignity and left the rest to my pal but he couldn’t stop laughing long enough to do it alone.
Great story. I came close to a nasty incident with a ram in Iceland. He and two ewes were in a cave on a bluff and I tried to get a photo. Discrestion was the better part of valor that day as I retreated to my car.
The sheep at the museum all seemed to be ewes when we were there. Except for one who put up a bit of a fuss, they seemed pretty easy.
Oh! This post hasn’t shown up in my reader, I just discovered it via references to your second latest post…
What a great picture, Chris! It certainly looks like you just travelled back in time ๐ It would also look great as a genre painting, maybe dutch ๐ Also: I love sheep! Cheers!
Thanks, Sarah. This was from a trip to Old Sturbridge Village back in 2014. It was fun to go on a day they did the sheep shearing. My sister and her family accompanied us. It was a lot of fun. Cheers!
I always loved our trips there…thanks for another great memory of home.
You’re welcome. We were impresed by the museum. They really do a great job.
How interesting ..What a great way for the community to see first hand these things!

A great picture. I would have loved to have seen it!
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it. It is definitely worth seeing if anyone in your area does a demonstration.

Never trust a ram with a ewe, a ewe with a lamb or a lamb with a halo …
That sheep looks really happy! On a warm day, no doubt it felt good to get the springtime “haircut.” ๐
I agree, although there was one sheep who seemed intent on wearing his hair long. But most seemed to enjoy the trim. ๐
